Backflow Testing in Illinois: What Every Homeowner Needs to Know
If you have a sprinkler system in Illinois, you’re required by law to have a backflow preventer — and many municipalities require annual testing. Here’s what every Chicago suburb homeowner needs to know.
What Is a Backflow Preventer?
A backflow preventer is a mechanical device installed on your irrigation system that prevents water from flowing backward into your home’s drinking water supply. Without it, fertilizers, pesticides, and bacteria from your lawn could contaminate your potable water.
Illinois plumbing code requires a backflow preventer on every irrigation system. It’s not optional.
Annual Testing Requirements
Many North Shore and Chicago suburb municipalities require annual backflow testing by a certified technician. Communities that require testing include:
- Highland Park
- Deerfield
- Northbrook
- Glenview
- Wilmette
- Lake Forest
- Libertyville
- Arlington Heights
- Palatine
Check with your local water department if you’re unsure about your municipality’s requirements. Failure to test can result in fines or water service shutoff.
What Happens During a Backflow Test?
A certified technician connects test gauges to the device and checks that both check valves and the relief valve are functioning properly. The test takes about 15-20 minutes. If the device passes, we file the test report with your municipality. If it fails, we repair or replace it on the spot.
When to Test
Most municipalities require testing between April and June — right after spring startup. We recommend scheduling your backflow test at the same time as your spring startup service to save a trip.
Cost
A standard backflow test runs $50-100. If repairs are needed, parts and labor are additional. A full backflow preventer replacement runs $300-800 depending on the type and size.
