Long Grove Sprinkler Systems

Sprinkler Systems in Long Grove, Illinois

Long Grove is the most technically demanding village we serve for irrigation, and almost nothing about a standard suburban sprinkler install applies here. The reason is simple: most of Long Grove is not on city water.

Well water changes the entire design

Much of Long Grove draws from groundwater. Many residents are on private shallow wells. The village also owns and operates a deep well system along Illinois Route 83, built in part to protect the shallow aquifer that so many properties depend on, and Long Grove has more recently been working toward Lake Michigan supply through an interconnection with the Village of Buffalo Grove.

If your property is on a well, your irrigation system is not limited by a municipal main. It is limited by your pump and by how fast your well recovers. That single fact drives every design decision:

  • Available flow is finite. A municipal lot might support a zone running eight or ten heads. A well-fed system has to be sized to what the pump can actually deliver without drawing the well down. That usually means more zones, each with fewer heads, running in sequence over a longer window.
  • Static pressure is often lower. Head selection has to match real measured pressure at the property, not an assumed 60 psi. Get this wrong and you get heads that mist instead of throwing, which looks like a coverage problem but is actually a pressure problem.
  • Recovery rate sets the schedule. Run too many zones back to back and you can pull the well down faster than it refills. We measure, then build a schedule the well can sustain – usually starting in the small hours so there is a full recovery window before household demand.

None of that is guesswork you can skip. A contractor who installs Long Grove the way they install Buffalo Grove will give you a system that either underperforms or stresses your well.

Aquifer conservation is a local priority

The village has been explicit that the deep aquifer is a finite resource, and that reducing draw helps preserve it for the subdivisions and the wider region that depend on it. We take that seriously in design: drip irrigation wherever beds allow it instead of spray, smart scheduling that skips cycles after rain, and zone layouts that avoid watering hardscape and driveway edges. On a well system this is not only good citizenship – it protects your own supply.

Three-acre lots are a different scale of project

Much of Long Grove is zoned at three acres or more, and that changes the job from a weekend install into real infrastructure. Properties near the Historic Downtown, out by Reed-Turner Woodland, and through the estate subdivisions often have long pipe runs, significant elevation change across the property, mature oak groves, and meaningful distance between the well head and the furthest zone.

Elevation matters more than people expect. Every ten feet of rise costs you pressure. On a sloped three-acre lot, the far high corner can be effectively unwaterable unless the system is designed for it from the start – which can mean pressure-regulated heads, separate zones by elevation band, or a booster pump.

Large wooded lots also bring a canopy problem at significant scale: deep shade and aggressive root competition under established oak groves. Those areas need their own zones and their own run times. Turf in deep shade needs substantially less water than turf fifteen feet away in full sun, and watering both on one schedule gives you standing water in the shade and dry patches in the open.

Our Long Grove sprinkler services

  • System design and installation – sized to your measured flow and pressure, not a template
  • Repair and troubleshooting – including pressure problems specific to well-fed systems
  • Spring startup – slow pressurization, zone-by-zone testing, controller programming
  • Winterization and blowout – compressed-air clearing before the first hard freeze
  • Smart control – Hunter Hydrawise controllers, which skip cycles on local weather data and are particularly worth having on a well
  • Backflow prevention testing – where your supply requires it

Seasonal service on a well system

Winterization is critical and slightly different on a well-fed system, because the pump and any above-grade equipment need protecting alongside the lines. We blow the lines out with compressed air and address the supply side as well. In Lake County that work generally needs to happen between October and the first hard freeze in November.

We measure your actual pressure and flow before designing anything – on a well property, that measurement is the whole job. We walk the property in daylight so we can read grade, sun and tree cover properly.
